I had just laid back down after taking my daughter to school and had drifted off to sleep and heard the the terrible news, it was ironic because this happened before when another one of my favorite entertainers passed away (Michael Jackson) , hearing of her passing I sat up in bed and started to cry. My son and I had just watched the The Wiz together Saturday night ,after he had came back home from seeing the CBTCC (Cincinnati Theater) production of The Wiz we both love the movie. He shared his favorite moments from the play and I of the movie and we compared the two. We both loved seinng Ms. Horne at the end of the movie Ms. Horne was so angelic in her role as Glenda -The Good Witch. Although I had seen the movie many times before I just get captivated by her face and the way she sang "Beilive in Yourself" (I think I must have known she was transcending). I will miss her!
Ms. Lena Horne was a groundbreaking entertainer and Civil Rights activist. Born in 1917, in Brooklyn,NY ,at the age of 16 she joined the famous Cotton Club as a performer and went on to be cast in many films;including the ever popular Stormy Weather (1943). She married twice and bore two children. Ms. Horne even into her 80's released albums. In the mid to late 90's Ms. Horne made few,if any public appearances and maintained a living in NYC.
May 9 2010 (Mother' Day) Ms. Lena Horne passed away at the age of 92 at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.
